THE IDEA

A world not built for the visually impaired

A world not built for the visually impaired

In the United States, nearly seven million people live with visual acuity loss and more than twelve million experience some level of color blindness. Everyday tasks like identifying objects, reading labels, navigating spaces, or distinguishing colors often require assistance that is not always available.


(a)Eyes offers an accessible, hands-free way for users to understand what is around them without relying on screens or visual interfaces.
The goal is not to compensate for missing information, but to augment the ability to perceive the environment.

THE IDEA

Technology as Augmentation

The device captures images through onboard camera, sends them to AI vision models, and turns the results into clear spoken feedback. Users can ask questions about objects, colors, signs, food, textures, and scenes around them. The interaction is simple. A button press. A voice question. A spoken answer. Tasks like checking whether fruit is ripe, understanding the color of clothing, reading expiration dates, identifying traffic signals, or describing artwork become immediate and accessible.

(a)Eyes runs on an ESP32 microcontroller and a custom PCB optimized for portability. By combining embedded computing with cloud-based intelligence, the device delivers fast, reliable assistance without overwhelming the user with technical complexity.


Every design choice supports ease of use. The workflow mirrors natural conversation, making the device practical for daily routines, indoor and outdoor navigation, and quick tasks where visual information is needed.
